JAXMQG August Meeting Recap

Meeting Winners: Congrats to Paula and Janelle our 50/50 and door prize winners!

Committee Updates

Challenges: The monthly challenge this month is a bright wonky log cabin. Make a 12.5″ square. I forgot to get a picture of the samples the challenge committee brought in, but there are lots online you can view.

Colorful handmade textiles. Colored fabric patchwork background. Patchwork background. Multicolored patchwork knitted background.

In addition, we have the ongoing Mysterious Creative Journey challenge. See the Challenges page for more information on both.

Duval County Library Display:

The display is open to view at the main library downtown through October 2. If you go on a Saturday, there is little traffic and free parking at metered lots and in the Duval Street garage (with a validated ticket from the library).

Hendricks Avenue Baptist Display: The quilts are hung in the narthex of the church. Margaret opened the church for us to take a look at the display. She encouraged those with quilts on display to attend the reception to talk about their quilts.

QuiltFest: QuiltFest is next month. Let’s push through getting those quilts finished! Also, please consider volunteering – as the saying goes, many hands make light work.

If you volunteer for QuiltFest, you get in free that day. Note that volunteering for our guild table does not give you free admission to QuiltFest.

Education: The 2028 class options were on display for future voting. The classes look incredible; it will be difficult to make our choices. See Facebook for more detail on the classes.

Hospice Presentation:

We had a volunteer representative from Community Hospice give a presentation on how we could use our creative talents to contribute to their patients’ comfort. She discussed a need for memory pillow makers, fidget mats, adult and teen bibs, and quilts. She told us of the Red, White, and Bluetique taking place in Gainesville and Amelia Island where we can donate made items for them to sell and raise money for Hospice’s needs. If you’re interested in helping with any of these projects, contact Carla B.

Other Announcements

  • Marcia D. told us about work she’s been involved with to teach refugees garment sewing. They meet Tuesdays from 10-12:30 at Faith UMC. If you’re interested in helping out at all, contact Marcia.

Sew & Tell

As usual, so many of great items shared this month!

August Program

Our program this month was a presentation by several of our members who formed an art quilt group to create small quilts following prompts. They shared the following presentation with us. They also had such a good time with this exercise, that they are continuing for a second year, and they encouraged others in the guild to consider starting their own groups.

Download their presentation to read about what they did and see their fantastic output here.
