In this class quilters will create improv quilt tops using basic shapes including half square triangles, half rectangle triangles, flying geese, and drunkards path; then arrange the shapes to tell a visual story. We’ll discuss working with scale, color, and negative space to create a harmonious design, and look at examples of designs that feature arranged shapes for inspiration. Students will sew shape blocks, spend time playing on the design wall, and start piecing their quilt tops. Each student will finish class with a unique design and all the blocks needed to complete their project at home. Students should know how to piece basic shapes as the focus will be on designing and piecing the quilt top.

Working with improv can be wonderfully freeing, yet the outcome can seem overwhelming to the senses. Choosing constraints at the outset of an improv project and not only lower the decision-making burden that can seem overwhelming, it can also ensure your composition finishes with dramatic flair. In this class you will explore several different variations of improv triangles and experiment with variables that will alter the look of each variation. You will then incorporate these blocks into a large wedge layout to make a 24” square wall hanging.

Pieced Curves and Transparency

Instructor: Karen Bolan
Zoom

Are you intimidated by curves but love precision piecing? Start the Cool as a Cactus quilt in class, featuring pieced curves, a unique border treatment, and color palette that features transparency. Class will begin with an exercise in creating transparency effects, then we work from paper templates to accurately cut and piece large diameter curves. Learn to cut and precisely piece large-diameter curves from templates, assemble a quilt top with pieced borders, and plan a color palette that includes a transparency effect.

In this workshop participants are provided with a few pattern designs to choose from in order to learn the mechanics of this technique. The instructor will provide guidelines for creating a full-scale pattern on freezer paper and assemble the forms using a technique called Áppli-piecing”, originally developed by Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry. By using this technique, you can bring almost any complex, abstract idea into quilt form. You will retain a clean, graphic look, and when complete, you will have a quilt top pieced together with a ¼” seam allowance.

Beginner Free Motion Quilting with Wiggle Room

Instructor: Sally Terry
In-person
Class Date: July 17, 2027
Member Registration Date: TBD
Non-Member Registration Date: TBD

Students start with a simple technique to easily follow a pattern and smooth out their shapes. Remember, “as long as your shapes are pretty you don’t have to rip out.” Learn how to move your hands, where to focus your eyes, count for consistency and how to use Sally’s “wiggle room” method to hide your bobbles and wobbles.
