JAXMQG Community Outreach

Many thanks to our guild members who donate their hand made quilts made with lots of love!!

The committee has selected two non profit groups JAXMQG will be supporting this year: Family Support Services (Foster Care) and Hospice. Members wishing to donate items are welcome to bring quilts to meetings and drop off with any of the members listed above.

If you want to donate to your own cause, please let the team know so we can track the entirety of JAXMQG donations to our community. Whether you drop off the quilts with a committee member or donate directly to an organization of your choice, please sign the donation log so we have a record of all that we are doing as a guild.

A few members have offered to long arm quilts if a member cannot do this on their own. See a committee member if you have a top to be quilted and they will put you in touch with a longarmer. If any other members with long arm machines would like to be added to the list, please send an email to jaxmqg@gmail.com.

Below is overview of the current community outreach opportunities. Please let the community outreach team know if you have any questions!

FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES (FOSTER CARE)

Family Support Services of Northeast Florida oversees several agencies providing services for children and families involved in foster care, and also directly provides services to young adults aging out of foster care (~18-23 years old).  You can learn more about the organization at https://www.fssjax.org/.

They have a wide variety of needs for quilts. Quilts for older kids are much needed, but they will happily accept quilts of all sizes. The kids are always excited to receive something uniquely their own. Some of the items they could use are:

  • Duffel Bags – They said kids typically have a suitcase when they are placed in foster care, but that they often leave it when they leave care. The duffel bag would be theirs to keep.
  • Baby/Kid Quilts – For kids in foster care, and older kids in foster care who have kids of their own
  • Lap Quilts
  • Twin Quilts
    • The lap and twin size quilts are good for teens who age out of care and are living on their own for the first time
  • FSS provides graduation baskets for graduating seniors. Quilts or duffel bags could be included in those.

COMMUNITY HOSPICE: FIDGET MATS and HEARTS

Community Hospice improves the quality of life for patients and families and is the Compassionate Guide for end-of-life Hospice care in our community. You can learn more about them at https://www.communityhospice.com.

Small fidget mats that are 18 x 18 up to 24 x 24 (but no larger please) are in HIGH demand. Fidget mats have a variety of sensory items sewn on securely such as zippers, buttons, pockets, and anything that has texture (like minky). Please double check that items are very securely sewn onto the mat. Here is link to a fidget mat guide.

Hearts are used to hang by each patient’s bed. These are small 6″ hearts that can be seasonal, holiday, or just bright and fun. This document has directions on how to make them.
