Current JAXMQG Challenges

Happy 250th Birthday USA!

Due at the June and July meetings

Blocks: Stars, stripes, fireworks, streamers, pinwheels, four patches, . . .Any block that screams patriotic. You can also pick a state and incorporate that into your patriotic block. Traditional, improv, paper piecing techniques can be used.

Colors: Think patriotic. Red, white, and blue fabrics. Solids or prints.

Sizes: 3.5″, 6.5″, 9.5″, 12.5″ unfinished sizes. DO NOT TRIM to make putting the blocks together easier.

We plan on having sit and sews after the June party and the July meeting to make blocks. Fabric will be available as well as paper piecing paper for star blocks. You will need to bring your own sewing machine and notions. If you have extra fabric to share please bring that to the sit and sews.

Our goal is to make one maybe two lap size quilts to donate to veterans.

Mysterious Creative Journey

This is a six-month challenge where you’ll make your own improv quilt of any size or shape following different prompts each month. The prompts will be given in shapes (i.e. circle) or type of block (i.e., half square triangle). Your answer to the prompts will be incorporated into your overall quilt. You may create a block, or a strip. The prompt shape must be incorporated. It can be through piecing or printed fabric.

Your quilt can be any size, but plan for 16” or longer on each side. HOWEVER, it’s your quilt, so do as you want.

You do not bring your progress to each meeting. Instead, you will bring your quilt (or at least your top) to the December meeting.

You can join any time during the challenge. Since we aren’t sharing at each meeting, no one will know if you’re behind.

If you have questions, email Joan Parker with questions.

Month 1, April: Make a block for the center of your quilt. Your block can be any size or shape.

Month 2, May: The 2nd challenge is STARS—any way you want it! Incorporate STARS into your quilt. You can do improv stars, traditional stars, etc. in either print or solid OR even fabric that has stars in it. Stick to the color scheme you chose. Make one or several stars. Or make ½ square triangles with star fabric! Design your quilt as you go. Remember, we are not sharing until the last challenge! Enjoy the journey!

Month 3, June: CURVES
Any way you want it!
This month create a block, strip, or whatever you like that incorporates curves – a drunkard path block, wavy strips, or fabric with curves in it. The curves do not need to make a circle.
Again, stick to your color pallet using solids or prints. This prompt is due in July, but not shown at the meeting. Our quilts will be a surprise to us all when we showcase them at the Christmas party!

Enjoy! Most of all Have Fun!
