Instagram is a social media app for your android or iPhone that allows you to share photos and videos on your own personal “news feed” similar to that of Facebook and Twitter. Other users can follow you and see everything you add to your feed. Likewise, you can follow other users and see what they are posting. You have the option of having a private account, where only people you approve can follow you, or a public account, where everyone can see.
The quilting community has a very large presence on Instagram and it’s fun and informative!
Many of the fabric companies have accounts you can follow, which is a great way to see what new fabrics just came out and what’s coming out down the road. A few to check out are @freespiritfabric , @cottonandsteel , @rjrfabrics , @andoverfabrics and @modafabrics There are too many to list here, but you get the idea.
Likewise, fabric designers are also very popular to follow. Many times the designers will show sneak peaks of fabrics they are working on, or they may spotlight makers who are using their fabrics or maybe even do a live video while they are at Quilt Market or Quilt Con! @alisonglass , @libselliott , @kaffefassettstudio , @tulapink , @maureencracknell are just a tiny sampling of the designers out there.
Another “category” to follow is the makers! This can be all the quilters in your local guild, your sewing friends, other guilds (we have our own @jaxmqg). There are also makers on Instagram who the fabric companies enlist to highlight their fabrics. Check out @misterdomestic , he has over 35,000 followers and is hilarious!
The list goes on and on. Instagram is a great way to make new friends from all over the world, get new ideas, learn and keep very current with the modern quilting movement. Make sure your following @jaxmqg at least!! Feel free to reply with the IG names of fabric companies, designers, makers, stores, guilds etc that you follow. The more the merrier!
