Introducing 2016 Block of the Month

Hello JMQG members. Those of you who attended the January meeting know that our new guild program committee was seeking ideas for the block of the month program that we have been doing. We hope that with this new year, we can address the different points suggested by our members to make the BOM program more inviting to all of you.  So here are a few changes:

  • While many members expressed their desire to continue the block lottery, some indicated that they would like to create a sampler (for themselves) of the different BOM blocks. So we say why not both? So for each month when the BOM is presented, make a block for the lottery in the chosen color palette and one for yourself in your own colors if you want to make a sampler of all the blocks. Of course, a charity block is also always welcome.
  • Some members indicated they had a hard time making the variety of fabrics used in some blocks work for them, so we think we came up with a good color palette solution: Black, white and brights! This color palette will be used throughout the year. Each month, the block chosen will have a black and white fabric background and bright color/s chosen for each month. Hopefully doing this will make it easier for the winner to make a gorgeous quilt with the blocks they win.

Now that the style has been established, allow me to present to you Sew Mama Sew Modern BOM , which we will be following this year. The BOM features modern quilt blocks of varying styles and difficulty levels that hopefully will inspire us and build our skills. Each month, the corresponding block will be used and a bright color/s will be selected to go with black and white fabric background for the lottery BOM and if you are making a charity block. For your own sampler, obviously you can make it in the colors of your choice.

So without further ado, let’s begin with our February BOM: A cross-weaved square.  And yes, I see it has partial pieced seams and all, but directions look great, so let’s start our BOM with a bang!
