JAXMQG January Meeting

We had 54 members and 10 guests at the JAXMQG January meeting! We were happy to welcome six of the guests who are now new members: Ginny H., Ana L., Jessica R., Victoria R., Tammy S., and Nancy W.

Meeting Winners! Ana won the 50/50 drawing today – at her first meeting! And congratulations to Robin who won the door prize.

2024/25 Board Members Alison, the incoming 2025/26 president, thanked the out going board members for all their had work over the previous year that saw the guild grow and have their first year in QuiltFest.

2025 Committee Sign-ups: 2025 guild committee sign ups continues. We need more help with the Community Outreach, Programs, Fundraising, QuiltCon Outreach Quilt, and Newsletter. If you are interested in helping with any committee, please email jaxmqg@gmail.com.

2025 Membership Renewals: 2025 membership renewals are NOW open at $50 for the year. Renew by February 1st to maintain membership in the guild. If you have any questions contact Robbie K. Here is link to the online membership : https://jaxmqg.com/membership/

Free Table: We have a table at each meeting where members can bring sewing-related items to give away to other members. Following each meeting, a few members take the remaining items to other guilds for their free tables. Please make sure items you bring are sewing and/or craft related.

Cummer Museum Programs: Big thanks to Lisa H. and all the volunteers for all your work last year with the programs at the Cummer Museum. They were so successful that the museum is holding a similar activity on MLK day making a community quilt. They also have asked our guild to host a smaller program this year, possibly in April. Look for more information on this soon.

QuiltFest Presentation Pat D. and Leslee B. from QuiltFest attended the meeting and presented the guild with a check for education expenses. Over the past two years QuiltFest has grown, and they are thrilled to have Jax MQG involved.

Fundraising Franci S. discussed fundraising for the guild. Currently we are raffling off a quilt to raise money for the California wildfires. We’ve sold about 175 tickets so far and have time to sell more before the drawing at our February meeting. You can buy tickets here: Raffle Tickets. We will be holding two fundraising events per year. One will be to raffle off our QuiltCon Community Quilt. To get started, Franci would like some help to design and plan a quilt. The guild will then make the quilt.

Library Project Leslie B. discussed the project we’re doing with the Clay County library kids’ summer reading program. The library selected various books and members can select one and make a small quilt inspired by that book. The library has asked that the quilts are a minimum of 24″ square. Completed quilts are due at the April meeting.

UFOs Do you have UFOs (Unfinished Objects) sitting around? Kim B. discussed the UFO program that is a fun way to incent you to finish some this year. To enter, fill out a sheet (found HERE) with up to 10 UFOs and bring the sheet to any meeting during the year. Take it first to Robbie and give her $10. Once she has marked your sheet paid, you can submit it to Kim B. Then all you have to do is show your projects at a meeting as you finish them. If you gift or donate a project between meetings, please send Kim a photo of it completed so I can check it off. There is a drawing at the December holiday party for 50% of the funds collected from this program (the other 50% goes to the guild). For each UFO you complete, your name will go in the drawing. For example, if you complete 8 UFOs from your list, your name will go in 8 times.
A few rules and other Information:

The project must have been started in 2024 or earlier.
To get credit the project must be shown either at a meeting or by sending Kim a photo.
Also, to get credit, the project must be completely finished as in quilted and bound or faced if it is a quilt.
If you have more than 10 projects, you can fill out multiple sheets. Each sheet will cost an additional $10. If you don’t have 10 items, you can still fill up a sheet with as many as you have. It will still cost $10, but if you’re cleaning out your closet later and find another one, you can add it.
You can join in the UFO challenge at any time throughout the year, but the projects must have still been started before the beginning of the calendar year.

February Challenge The February challenge block is a 12 ½” block with a low volume, scrappy background and a contrasting fussy cut element. Blocks due at the next meeting on February 16, 2025. Read about the challenge details on the challenge webpage: https://jaxmqg.com/programs-challenges/
