We were very fortunate to have Debra Jalbert of Made of Honor Quilts come to Jacksonville to present a workshop for us on how to use our scraps to make a beautiful modern quilt. Debra has won many awards at QuiltCon, including 1st Place in Michael Miller Challenge in 2015 and 1st Place in the Improvisation Category 2018. After a short introduction letting us know what to expect, we joined Debra at the design wall to look at one of her quilts to get a visual of how to start our squares.
Our first task was to create a 4″ square with pieces no bigger than 1″, preferably cut with scissors. No precise cuts, not matching seams!
Everyone’s squares were different and all were amazing. Debra pointed out features of the squares and gave more hints to help us continue. Of course, we had to include the Candi & Robin photo bomb.
While we had lots of fun playing with our own scraps and finding hidden treasures at the scraps table, there was some serious sewing going on too!.
A fantastic lunch was provided by JAXMQG, and this amazing cake was provided by Sheryll of “Sweets by Sheryll,” a friend of our own Laura Bezares.
Yvonne @Maus_in_the_Haus made event special name tags for us. Thanks Yvonne!
Debra Jalbert treated us to a Trunk Show featuring quilts entered at QuiltCon.
TThe workshop was held at Christ United Methodist Church in Neptune Beach and we want to thank everyone who helped set up on Friday and who stayed after the workshop to help us put Wilson Hall back normal.
Thank you to Debra for sharing her time and talent with us. I think we can all agree that the workshop was a success and we would love to have more like it!
Until next time…..
Cindy
