Cindy is a new member to the Jax Modern Quilt Guild this year and we love having her!  Cindy is originally from Hayward, CA but has lived all over the U.S.A.  She stayed in California until her senior year in high school and then moved to Salt Lake City, UT with her parents.  After high school, Cindy attended and graduated from Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma with a degree in Christian Education.  This is where she met her husband Steve.  He was an Associate Pastor at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church here in Jacksonville and after serving several churches in Florida, he joined the Navy.  Cindy and Steve lived in 6 different places across the US and finally retired back here in Jacksonville.  Cindy has 2 children, Michelle (35) and David (34), and has 7 grandchildren!

Cindy first started sewing in the 2nd grade.  Her mother and grandmother taught her how to sew.  She had a “toy” sewing machine and made clothes for her dolls.  Her grandmother quilted, but Cindy didn’t start that until much later.  As she got older, she started sewing her own clothes and sewed her 1st college wardrobe!  During her college years, her sewing was put on hiatus and she didn’t pick it back up until she was married, had children and started sewing clothes for them.

While living in Alaska, Cindy visited a quilt shop and she got interested in quilting.  She took a beginner class in Washington and this is also where she attended her first quilt show.  Once she started having grandchildren in 2007, she began quilting regularly!  Her oldest grandson Nick was the lucky recipient of this tied quilt…

Cindy sends some quilts out for quilting but also does some of her own quilting on her domestic machine.  She mostly does stitch in the ditch and always thought of herself as a traditional quilter.

The first guild she belonged to in 2015 was called Pieceful Quilters.  She also attended a sewing group at Ft. Caroline Christian Church on Tuesdays AND went to Hilliard to sew with Country Star Quilters!  Lucky for us, she was invited to attend a Jax MQG meeting and joined this past January!  She loves the colors of modern quilting and how a lot of it is actually a mix of modern fabrics with traditional patterns.  Moving forward, Cindy feels her quilting will always be a mix of the two.  Her favorite colors are turquoise and purple.  She keeps trying to break away from these colors, but it’s hard, we know, and they always make an appearance.

Cindy believes her strength in sewing is her precise piecing.  She also has always been interested in different forms of art.  She taken drawing classes, painted tee shirts and has made beautifully embellished Christmas stockings for her grandchildren.

Moving forward, Cindy is very interested in getting an embroidery machine.  She is also very excited about attending Quiltcon 2019 in Nashville!  She has signed up for 2 classes and is waitlisted for a 3rd.  She’s excited to see what a modern quilt show is all about  and is just looking forward to the whole experience. Get ready Cindy!  What happens at Quiltcon stays at Quiltcon LOL! (bring an extra bag for purchases)…..
