June is all about turning it down…..to a “low volume” 🙂
Low Volume fabric shows up as a solid or nearly solid in a black n white photo. It varies from light tone on tone to text printed on a light background to light florals. Colors can vary. Low volume fabrics have always been around in the quilting world (previously called “muted”) and is an aesthetic that we see in modern quilting.
Rules for June’s BOM
- 12.5 in unfinished
- choose your favorite modern block or “modernise” a traditional block
- color scheme – light grays, light beige, and creams. You can include super light color but it should not stand out when looking at the finished block.
Here the examples I showed at our May meeting. You can see where the small amount of low volume color does not over power the block…

You can find some great Low Volume fabrics at Ladybug Quilt shop here in Jacksonville or Pink Castle Fabrics online for example. After making these blocks and thanks to Rikki over at Ladybug I now have my very own low volume fabric stash.
For some low volume quilt inspiration check here and here.
Remember to make 2, one for the winner and one for our charity stash. I will be bringing all the charity blocks I have to the June meeting for anyone that would like to work on putting a charity quilt together. Robin has graciously donated a bolt of batting to be used for our charity quilts.
As always I look forward to seeing what your creative minds produce 🙂
